I just got back from Seattle this week & am already a little homesick! Here are some pictures from my trip & a few of my favorite things to do when I’m home sweet home.

Drink lots and lots of coffee! My mom even put out two coffee makers this time around!

Make a batch of real chocolate chip cookies from scratch

Open presents with family. This year I welcomes a new addition to our family – Troy!

the love in a name

I LOVE names. I love naming things. I love hearing of off-beat names. It’s just the best “ah-ha” moment! A couple of readers have asked how I came up with “homespun forte” for my blog, and I must say it took some deep thought. I felt drawn to the word homespun because it is such a crafty sounding word, and it’s not overused like vintage, antique, shabby chic, or rustic. It also holds many descriptive words that are unique and full of meaning, “plain; unpolished; unsophisticated; simple; rustic; homely; unpretentious.” For about a month I tried to find the perfect word to pair “homespun” with. I was inspired by a co-workers blog sprouted kitchen, to find an off-beat word that fit seamlessly. Overtime, the word “forte” came to me. It was perfect because it has that musical component but also means “a strong point, as of a person; that in which one excels.” Not to say that I excel at being homespun, but I am drawn to those things. I like DIY projects & unique ideas – probably because of my childhood. Me and my sister were home schooled in elementary & had the opportunity to do lots of arts and crafts. We would try to make dresses out of construction paper, barbie weddings with isle runners made of toilet paper, play dough food for our trolls, window displays with our American Girl dolls, and handmade Christmas cards for the neighborhood -haha.

Ballerina Bears

When I was little, me and my sister shared a room wallpapered in ballerina bears. I remember lying in bed and looking up at the dancing ballerinas patterned on the wall. If I stared at them for too long, they started to move. Oh the magic of wallpaper!

Although cluttered, small patterned wallpaper is out (shown below), designers are finding modern ways to use it – as more of a room accent. I could get excited about this idea….AND that it wouldn’t take a lifetime to remove!

Cute for renters! Frame your wallpaper.

Or, frame it with molding…

Use wallpaper to subtly accent a fireplace.

Looks killer inset in a door!

Try bold wallpaper decals that make a room pop!

Or pretty soft patterned wallpaper on an accent wall.

Go bold in the bedroom using wallpaper to frame a headboard.

This is just pretty!

Getting my “Grove” on

In just two short weeks I am going to be a “Grover”. Changing my name hasn’t set in until recently. I’ve heard that the whole name change situation can be difficult for some women – almost like a new identity. I will miss being a Tangeman – such a strong German last name. But, being a Grover will be an exciting new adventure. And hey, my kids won’t be standing at the back of the line with arranged alphabetically :) Random fact : G is the seventh letter in the alphabet. 7 is a fun number.

When I first heard Troy’s last name, I couldn’t get away from the Sesame Street image in my mind. In Germany, the character “Grover” is called “Grobi.” Hehe, glad we are getting married in the US!

…But then I thought of the ever so trendy “Grove” in Los Angeles. I could definitely see myself as a “Grove – R”

My sister thinks my new last name sounds like an anthropologie garden name {aimee grover}. I like this idea!

I love the weirdest smells.

Today Troy & I had the opportunity to do an engagement shoot in Disneyland. We had a blast! Upon leaving, I ran over to get my “exit hand stamp.” Since I was little I have loved the smell of Disney’s hand stamp. It may smell like a mixture of cleaners to some people – but it is a magical smell to me! The infamous hand stamp got me thinking of some other weird smell that I like…

A hand stamp I found that reminds me of the Disneyland hand stamp – the same off-beat yellow.

Gasoline. I have heard it supposedly kills a few brain cells, but I can’t help taking a whiff when I fill up my tank.

I LOVE love love the smell of sunscreen. It makes me feel like I am at the beach. I found a perfume by Bobby Brown called “Beach” that smells just like it – all year round!

Maybe it just reminds me of days up at Forest Home Camp, but I like the smell of bug spray. I think a few other people might too – why else would they come in the form of a candle now-a-days?

To save myself from sounding like too much of a weirdo, I had to share a more normal scent that I love! Anything that smells like cozy fall is right up my alley – but I must say Yankee’s Spiced Pumpkin got it right on!

wise willow.

This has been an exciting weekend! My sister flew in & we went on my bachelorette trip to Palm Springs, where we stayed at the Ace hotel. It was quite a relaxing trip! We soaked up some sun, made s’mores, went out to eat & rented a good chick flick. On Saturday, my aunt Shay & Promise threw me a bridal shower! It was decorated from ceiling to floor like a coffee house. My sister came up with a cute craft – an advice book. Each guest created their own advice scrapbook page, which my sister then compiled into a book. I love my friends and family & will cherish their wise willow words forever!
