Suddenly Inspired / Polyvore

Me & Lindye had a lot of fun filming this latest episode of Suddenly Inspired. Polyvore – has become one of our new FAV sites! You can create custom collages using actual merchandise & products you find online! The Polyvore site is extremely helpful in creating inspiration boards for your wedding because each image saves the description, pricing and link from where it was found. Perfect for sending to bridesmaids right? Check out this episode’s easy tutorial & get inspired to create your own Polyvore!

I would love to see what you come up with! Be sure to leave a link in the comment section so we can all check out your design!!!

Troy Grover - Hey Mrs. Homespun! I miss you! Happy 4th :)

I LOVE Danish.

And not just danish pastries! I have discovered a new style that I just can’t get enough of…Danish Modern. After getting married I have learned to embrace compromise. I love vintage decor & Troy loves all things modern – we’ve got to find a compromise somewhere :) This past week we bought a new couch (yay!) and I have been looking for some other new pieces for our house. While I was cruising around craigslist one day (yes, I know craigslist) I kept seeing furniture with sleek modern lines and a vintage feel. I thought – “what style is THAT? Oooooh I like it I like it!” After some research, I found that others out there are really digging this style. It’s hip streamline vintage. Not old bulky musty grandma. I created a little modge podge of this style below! I wish I could plan my wedding again & do a modern Danish theme! Isn’t that cake awesome!? Mmmm…cut me a slice of that!

Ashley - Oh my gosh! I love this style too!! CUTE inspiration board by the way!

How to Hair-do

Lately I have had some ladies write in asking me how I do my hair. To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m much of a hair wizard. At all. In fact, much of my life has been spent fighting my hair. In junior high I went through some terrible hair phases & have learned a few tricks along the way – most of them from my sister. Do you remember when it was cool to wear your hair up with two little strands hanging down? You know, like in the movie 10 Things I Hate About you? Ya…I went through that phase. AND the phase where every hair had to be perfectly straight-ironed and in its place.  As I have gotten older, I have realized that it is far better to embrace the natural. To become buddies with your hair. To let IT decide which way the bangs are falling. The best part? It takes WAY less time! So here it goes…my first ever how-to hair-do.

Step 1: Good hair starts in the shower! If you are the type of person who must brush your hair,  do it while the conditioner is in. Once the conditioner is washed out, scrunch before stepping out of the shower.

Step 2: Put in your favorite hair product. My three faves are right now are Biosilk, Catwalk Biggie Root Boost (which my sister recommended to me :), and Catwalk Biggie Fast Fix. I probably break all the rules when applying these products – as I spray most of them in my hands & then scrunch them into my hair.

Step 3: Let it towel/air dry. Sometimes if I am in a hurry I use a diffuser – but most of the time I let it dry naturally.

Step 4: Put your hair half up, and look for pieces that need a curl boost. Then, using a medium curling iron, vertically start curling at the roots and wind in down until there is a small tail at the end. I tend not to curl down to the very end of the strand – as it tends to look too perfect :) Another tip – to create more “wavy” looking curls don’t wind the curling iron too tight. Let there be some space between the hair as it curls around the iron. Continue to section off hair & curl the stragglers until you are satisfied.

Step 5: Give your roots a little more boost. When you work your way to the top of your head, take the hair close to your roots & pull it over the top of the curling iron. This will give it a little lift up there!

Step 6: Tip your head upside down & give your hair a finishing spray – with your fav hair spray of course :)

Then shake it out! Don’t be afraid to toss it around – this messy style looks better that way!

Have any hair tips to share?

jill - holy crap, you’re gorgeous! im going to a wedding this weekend and am totally trying this!

moriah - wow. after having a baby, i kind of forgot how to do my hair and take care of myself. ha ha i tried these tricks this weekend, and my hair looked awesome! thank you! :)

Jennifer - Just came across your blog while blog hopping, LOVE IT. :) Have you ever tried curling your hair with a flat iron? I know, I know, a little bit of an oxymoron. But it’s fantastic! :)

Meagan - Aimee – I’m with everyone else… thanks for posting this! I’m coming off a every-hair-in-it’s-place phase, and I’m SO thankful the wavy look is in style right now.

aimee - Hey Lydia…I usually just tell my hair lady that I like lots of layers :) I wish I had something more specific to give you!

Lydia - Aimee, your hair is beautiful! Any tips on how you get it cut? I love your layers(?)!

aimee - Jenna! Good to hear! Funny you say that…I always consider chopping my hair off again too. It feels so good to be short – for a little while…and then gets frustrating when you can’t do much with it! Stay strong :) hehe.

Jenna Bourland - I’m growing my hair out from a super short length I tried last fall, and some days are so frustrating for me and leave me ready to chop it all off again. The in-between stage when your hair sits right above your shoulders is awful. But this gave me motivation to keep growing my hair out. Thanks!

Bethany - Great tips! Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve been following you for a few months and have always loved your hair!

rebecca - oh wow!! thanks so much for posting this :) I’ve been following your hubby troy’s photography blog and always thought your hair was divine! And now just recently spotted your blog and this hair post! I chopped my long locks off last October so now i’m letting them grow back out…i’m KICKING myself for chopping my hair off. i can’t wait for it to grow back out and to try these tips :) keep up the good work and keep those tips coming!

Annie - Oh how I envy you curly-heads! I use a herstyler (when I can be bothered) because my pin-straight hair WILL NOT curl with anything else. It takes about an hour. Sometimes it’s worth it ;)

Your hair is very pretty. Thank you for sharing this! :)

aimee - YES to hot tools! I completely agree! The best curling iron I had was a hot tools…time to invest in another one!

Tessa Stull - I was just going to suggest that. Wrapping the hair around the curling iron makes it look more natural than actually curling it. I always love using Hot tools curling irons. They are the hottest and the best…just a few tips that I have learned in the salon :)

aimee - Thanks for the tip Stevie! A friend of mine told me about that wrap around trick…I think I’m a little slow at it! Maybe you’ll have better luck! :)

Stevie Lee - Thanks a lot Aimee, this is helpful. In fact, I’m trying this right now! Here’s a tip incase anyone is interested: For a defined wavy look, don’t clamp the hair and twist the curling iron–instead, take a chunk of hair and wrap it AROUND the barrel. Very pretty. You’re gorgeous Aimee, thanks for the tips.

Melissa - very cute!!! i love that you guys are doing ideas for weddings :) im engaged and getting married in december, and my fiance’s sister (my best friend) is getting married in november. maybe you guys can help me come up with a centerpiece! i had a great idea but because of fire code i have to do something a little different. i have huge round tables and i want to do something with tons of candles. (they have to be enclosed flames as i now know) i was thinking making these stands of layered glass plates (kind of like cake stands, but stacked and get smaller as they go up) and each layer filled with candles in small votive jars (originally was going to do pillar candles)……but im afraid it wont cover enough table space…..any ideas?

Megan - That is a great tutorial! My friend is getting married in July and would love that idea! You guys are too cute :) thanks for sharing! Good luck with the rest of your series! (p.s. i found you from our indie biz class online :) Have a great weekend!

A little fun in Muir Woods

Troy & I are still in Northern California! We traveled up here to shoot a wedding near Yosemite & have had an amazing time traveling with Troy’s parents! Here are a couple of fun shots Troy took of me while visiting Muir Woods. So far, that has been my favorite spot! I loved the amazing smell of the trees, the warm sun & the ‘alive’ feeling I got walking through God’s creation! There is nothing like it!

Sorento goes for a road trip

A couple of weeks ago Troy & I bought a new car! For months we searched for the perfect Grover ride & decided upon the 2011 Kia Sorento. This week we traveled up north to Yosemite to shoot a wedding & took our Sorento for its first road trip. We are LOVING this car!! Here is a picture of our spicy red Grover mobile in Yosemite National Park :)

aimee - Yay! Haha it kinda does look like an ad! Props to Troy for that one!

Fresh Coffee Body Scrub. DIY.

Last year, while I worked at a spa – I tried this amazing body scrub by Red Flower’s Hammam line called the”Lemon coffee blossom olive stone scrub.” I LOVED how energizing the coffee in the scrub was & how it made my skin SO soft. With only a little of the Red Flower scrub left in the jar – I decided to play mad scientist & recreate it with none other than the Magic Bullet.

The ingredients listed on the jar include coffee, crushed almond, sugar, lemon rind, orange peel, black olive, fresh lemon juice and Neroli oil. Most of these are basic kitchen essentials – the only ingredient I had to track down was the essential oil Neroli. I found a small jar at Whole Foods -(but I think there are less expensive options out there).

Complete Shopping List

1 Small can of organic olives

2. One Orange

3. Two Lemons

4. Coffee grinds (preferably dark)

5. Handful of organic almonds

6. Organic Sugar

7. Neroli Essential Oil (from a health food store)

Directions

Step One: Once you have all of your ingredients, peel one orange and one lemon and process the rind as fine as you can.

Step Two: Squeeze both lemons and set aside the juice.

Step Three: Combine 3Tbsp ground coffee, 3Tbsp crushed almonds, and 4Tbsp sugar into your magic bullet (or other food processor).

Step Four: Add 3 chopped olives, 1Tbsp lemon rind, 1Tbsp orange rind, 2 Tbsp Lemon juice,  and 2 Tsp Neroli oil and blend blend blend! (I had to stir the mixture a few times & continue to blend to get the right consistency).

Feel free to tweak the recipe as you find fit! It may need a little extra Neroli/lemon juice for zest. Below you can see my final result on the left next to Red Flower’s authentic scrub on the right. I would say they look pretty close!

Use

This body scrub is great for use in the bath/shower. Leaves your skin feeling soft & rejuvenated. Small batches are recommended – if you make more than you can use, give some to a friend :)

aimee - Shayna – SO cool! Have fun shoppin today!

Shayna - Very neat! Now I’m all the more excited about going grocery shopping. :) I discovered your blog earlier this week and have very much enjoyed reading through your past entries.

Kodi - Ohhh I wanna make some. I will have to hunt down some Neroli oil!
